Autumn in the Scottish Highlands

Autumn is such a lovely season in the Scottish Highlands as the area slows down after the busy summer months, trees start to change colour and the dark skies are perfect for a spot of stargazing.

We have put together a list of 10 reasons to enjoy an autumn break in the Highlands.

  • Stunning Autumn Colours: Green leaves make way for the vibrant autumnal colours of reds, oranges and yellows. The carpets of leaves on the ground in the local woodlands are truly spectacular.
  • Quieter Roads: After the hustle and bustle of the summer months, autumn brings quieter roads and more relaxing journeys around the area.
  • Cosy Evenings: After a day out exploring, come back to your cosy lodge and relax with a hot chocolate and a good book.
  • Photography: Autumn is a wonderful time to stop and enjoy the view with your camera in hand ready to snap that perfect shot.
  • Crisp Autumn Walks: Wrap up warm and enjoy a low level walk through the local forests or along the Caledonian Canal.
  • Wildlife: As red squirrels search for their winter nuts you may just be lucky enough to spot one of these elusive animals.
  • Stargazing: The dark skies of the Highlands are the perfect spot for wrapping up warm, packing a flask and staring up at the stars.
  • The Northern lights: This natural phenomenon is a truly amazing spectacle. While there is no guarantee on when or where you might see them, longer, darker nights in autumn give you a higher chance of spotting them. With dark skies and wide open spaces of the Highlands you might just be in the right place at the right time.
  • Fewer People: In autumn you’ll find fewer people exploring the area meaning popular viewpoints, beauty spots and attractions will be quieter. This makes it easier to stop and enjoy the view without feeling rushed.
  • Relax and Slow Down: Allow yourself time to just relax and slow down in your lodge. Curl up on the sofa with a cuppa and a good book or simply just watch the view out of the window.
