Easy Walks in Spean Bridge

Three Easy Walks in Spean Bridge

There are many great walks in Spean Bridge. Often referred to as the crossroads of the Highlands, many people pass through the village on their travels in the area. However, it is also a great place to explore in its own right. Do not miss these places for three easy walks around the village.

Commando Memorial

The Commando Memorial is a striking bronze statue of three commandos overlooking Ben Nevis and the Nevis Range mountains. It was unveiled by the Queen on 27th September 1952 as a memorial to World War 2 Commandos who had trained at nearby Achnacarry Castle.

Many people come to Spean Bridge to visit the Memorial, but what most do not know is that there is a lovely 7km loop walk you can do. Starting at the Commando Memorial follow the path signposted to Spean Bridge which will lead you to the historic Highbridge, part of General Wade’s military road. Allow time for this walk as it is one of the most scenic and historic walks in Spean Bridge.

The Wee Minister

Located in the Killiechonate Woodland in Spean Bridge is Wee Minister, a wooden statue of the Reverend John McIntosh according to the information plaque which stands alongside. However local opinion is that the statue is actually of the first Moderator of the Free Church in Scotland, Dr Thomas Chalmers.

The Wee Minister is located about an hour’s walk along The Old Drove Road in the Woodland. The road itself was once a major route for cattle transportation between the Trysts at Crieff and Falkirk. The rough track starts off uphill and then flattens out to a steady incline before becoming steeper again as you approach the Wee Minister. As a result of the height you gain during the walk, you will see some beautiful mountain and glen views along the way.

The Caledonian Canal

You can join the canal at Gairlochy, 3 miles from Spean Bridge, and walk or cycle along the well maintained towpath. Take the path to the East and take the short walk to Gairlochy Lighthouse at the head of Loch Lochy, where it joins up with the canal.

For a longer walk or cycle, head West towards Fort William (7 miles) where you will find Neptune’s Staircase, an incredible series of eight locks which take boats around 90 minutes to travel through.
