Known officially as the Jacobite Steam Train, this enchanting train journey has become known as the Harry Potter Steam Train, thanks to its starring role in the iconic film series.
This magical 84-mile round-trip journey has been described as one of the most scenic train rides in the world. A must-do for many visitors to the Highlands, it follows a route filled with breathtaking landscapes and truly magical photo opportunities.
Your adventure starts in Fort William, the largest town in the Highlands and home of the UK’s highest mountain, Ben Nevis. From here, the Harry Potter Steam Train follows the edge of Loch Eil, before heading on to the Glenfinnan Viaduct. Fans of Harry Potter will instantly recognise the stunning 21 arch viaduct from the movies. As the train crosses, you will enjoy wonderful views of the Glenfinnan Memorial and Loch Shiel. If time allows the train will slow down allowing you extra time to take those precious photos. The train then makes its first stop at Glenfinnan station.
From Glenfinnan the train journey continues on to Araisaig, the most westerly train station in mainland Britain. You can request to alight the train here by speaking to the guard. The journey continues on through Morar before finally arriving in the small fishing town of Mallaig. The one-way journey takes about one and a half hours.
Whether you’re a Harry Potter fan or simply a lover of scenic travel, the Harry Potter Steam Train is a wonderful day out in the Scottish Highlands.
Top Tip: If you plan to have lunch in a restaurant or cafe in Mallaig, get off the train promptly as large numbers of other train passengers will also be trying to grab a bite to eat and be back on the train in good time for its departure.
