Day Trip to the Isle of Skye

Many people want to visit the Isle of Skye during their trip to the Highlands – and rightly so with its picturesque villages and stunning scenery. A day trip to the Isle of Skye is easily achievable from Spean Bridge.

Which Route Should I Take?

You have three options for routes to get to Skye depending on the time of year – the ferry from Mallaig (you will need to book this in advance), the Skye bridge or the ferry from Glenelg. The bridge at Kyle of Lochalsh is possibly the most convenient as you do not need to consider ferry times, but the choice is yours.

Take a Stroll Around Portree

Once on the Isle of Skye many of the ‘must see’ sights are in the north-east of the island. The popular village of Portree, the capital of the island, is a nice spot for a stroll around the shops to pick up a souvenir or two. We recommend you take a walk down to the small harbour to look at the fishing boats and the row of brightly coloured houses which make for a great photo.

After a stop off in Portree, take a scenic drive around the north part of the island. Take the road towards Valtos, driving north along the east coast of the peninsula.

The Old Man of Storr

You have a number of options for stop offs along this coast. You will pass the Old Man of Storr, possibly the most popular hike on Skye. The full hike is 4.5km and takes around 2 hours. However it is possible to do a much shorter version and still take in the wonderful view of both the Old Man and the views across to the Isle of Rathsaay and Torridon on the mainland.

Waterfalls and Dinosaurs

After your walk, jump back in the car and continue your journey north along the coast road. We recommend stopping off to take in the view at Lealt Falls and Kilt Rock and Mealt Falls viewpoint. For any dinosaur hunters among you, you might want to add a visit to An Corran Beach to look for dinosaur fossils to your itinerary. The beach also has lovely views out to Staffin Island and Flodigarry Island.

From An Corran you have the option of returning back the way you came, or continuing north, completing the drive around the whole peninsula.

So you do not need to think about ferry times or rush your journey back, when you are ready to leave Skye take the road bridge to Kyle of Lochalsh and head back home.
