The Cairngorm Mountain Railway is a unique way to explore the dramatic landscapes of the Scottish Highlands. This funicular railway climbs the slopes of Cairn Gorm, one of the peaks in the Cairngorms mountain range. Over recent years it has been closed more than it’s been open, but after a major £25 million investment to repair and upgrade the viaduct and supporting structures, the Cairngorm Mountain Railway is now open once again and well worth a visit.
The base station for the Cairngorm Mountain Railway is at the Cairngorm Mountain Resort, just outside Aviemore. It’s an easy drive, with a spacious car park at the base station. From there, you can catch the funicular train to the top. Each train holds around 100 people. It’s mostly standing room, but there are bench seats available if needed.
The train is enclosed in glass, offering fantastic views as it climbs up the mountain. There’s even a panoramic roof, so you won’t miss a thing. The journey takes less than 10 minutes, with a helpful audio commentary sharing facts about the Cairngorm Mountain Railway, the local wildlife and the area.
At just over 2 km long, this is the highest railway in the UK, reaching 1,097 metres (3,599 ft) at the Ptarmigan Top Station. On arrival at the summit, you’ll find a spacious outdoor viewing terrace with picnic benches which are ideal for soaking up the panoramic views. Inside, there’s a café with large windows, as well as an exhibition space and small gift shop.
We visited the Cairngorm Mountain Railway on a sunny day in early May and there was still snow at the top. It was a good reminder to bring warm layers, even when the weather feels mild lower down in Aviemore or Glenmore.
While you’re in the area, don’t miss a stop at Loch Morlich. It’s just a short drive from the Cairngorm Mountain Railway base station. With its sandy beach, café and watersports hire, it’s the perfect place to enjoy a picnic or paddle while gazing up at the mountains you’ve just visited.
