- In season, guests are welcome to fish the River Spean
at Burnbank, for salmon and brown trout using fly or spinner.
A permit can be obtained from reception,
which is free to guests, and which will be valid for the
duration of your stay here.
There are a few rules attached, which are as follows:
- Fishing is with fly or spinner only. The use of worms or other bait is strictly prohibited.
- Salmon fishing is on a catch & release basis. Any salmon caught must be returned to the water
unharmed.
- Trout measuring ten inches (25cm) or more may be kept. All fish under that length must be
returned to the water unharmed.
- Fishing is permitted between sunrise and sunset.
- The use of set lines (unattended rods) is strictly prohibited.
- Salmon fishing on a Sunday is forbidden anywhere in Scotland. Therefore, on a Sunday:
- the use of spinners is prohibited.
- the use of salmon flies is prohibited.
- leader breaking strain must not exceed 5lb (2.25kg).
- You may be asked by a water bailiff to produce your permit so please keep it with you.
- We have fly fishing tackle for hire,
subject to availability.
- For people using their own tackle which has been used to fish abroad
within the last six weeks, (which would particularly apply to oversees visitors,)
please seek advice from us regarding the possible need to disinfect
tackle in order to prevent the spread of the parasite gyrodactylus salaris,
which is a notifiable disease affecting salmon. Disinfection of affected tackle can be arranged free of charge.
- We are happy to discuss with you other places to fish. You can also refer
to the information booklet “Fort William Fishing Guide” which is displayed in our
information room. Tackle shops can be found in Spean Bridge and
Fort William, both of which are able to sell permits for many places
mentioned in the booklet.
